Please use good quality, prewashed fabrics only.
Mediums and darks. Brights are ok.
No obvious juvenile, holiday. No solids.

Swapping Sept. Oct. Nov. Maybe longer depending on interest.
Have baggies to Moms the Wednesday before guild.

Cut 4-5 inch squares from the same fabric. Pin these together with a piece of paper with your name on it. This is one set. No more than 3 sets alike. You can swap 25 sets. Put the sets in a baggie with your name on it and a paper with the number of sets your are swapping.

August Quilt Guild will be held at Linda Bringhurst's house. Bring your own chair and a salad or dessert.

In September we will have Charlotte Anderson come and talk about her artistic quilts.

October will be the featherweight class. The guild will pay for the class. They will have a tool kit for sale for $10. The class will teach you how to service your featherweight.

If you are interested in helping with or being in charge of Show Goose this year let Lisa know.

We are excited to start a new year of quilt guild! We had a great turn out for our first meeting. Lisa S is our president this year and has some fun new ideas for us to participate in. We will be having a monthly mini trunk show from one of our members, a paper bag swap, and a new UFO competition.

Mini Trunk Show by Lisa S.

This quilt was made years ago from two guild swaps, a nine patch and an hour glass.
A favorite bulls eye quilt

These next quilts were made by Lisa's great grandma on a seep ranch in Southern Utah. She thinks that she probably used whatever fabric she could find available to her including clothing.

The yellow quilt was washed and the wool batting shrunk. Lisa unpicked the quilting replaced the batting with an antique batting and requilted the quilt.

The last quilt was made by her husbands grandma. They are not sure what the pattern is, so if anyone has seen this block and knows the name of it let Lisa know!

This has been a bad month for the quilt guild newsletter! First I lost my notes from the meeting then I couldn't find where I saved the pictures on my computer. Well I finally found the pictures but no notes so here is the show and tell without any explanation. I guess if you can see yourself in the picture you know what you made!!! If I find my notes I will identify the quilters later. Sorry!

Julie Saville came to our meeting and do a trunk show. Here are some of the cute quilts that she showed us. She does all of her own quilting on her machine and did an awesome job.

For November come early at 6:00 and learn from Holly N. how to make the little bag to hold credit cards/ punch card etc. you will need 2-10 inch squares of fabric and 20 inches of rick rack.

This is just one example of a label I put on a quilt I made for my Mother-n-law. Her Mother had passed away, so I took her clothing and made a scrappy quilt for her. She just love it.

This month lets talk about what your favorite pattern is. What is something you like to make over and over again and why. We know that Ann loves the strippy quilts and Lisa has a favorite too, just can't remember the name. What is your favorite Book, or pattern or something you love to make?

The news this month is that Quilt Fest is coming up on October 5-9, 2010 in Murray. There is a beautiful opportunity quilt that you can buy tickets for. Contact Ann for the tickets. Mini quilts are still needed as well. Contact Ann for more information.

The Road to Oklahoma quilt swap is starting. We will swap for 3 months total and if you participate all three months you will almost have enough fabric for a queen size quilt. I can't get the scanned handout to post to this blog, so here is the information:
Please use good quality, prewashed fabrics only.
Mediums and Darks
No obvious juvenile, holiday. No solids.
Country colors and tones, no jump off the quilt prints or colors.
Swapping July, August, and September.
Have baggies to Mom's the Monday before guild, (July 6, 2010, because of the holiday)

Cut strips 3 1/2 " by at least 20"(Just use 1/2 the width of fabric or the width of the fat quarter)
For one set, use 6 different fabrics. Cut 5 strips from each fabric. Make 5 stacks of strips placing one of each different fabric in the stacks. Put each stack in a separate baggie with your name on it. Keep one for yourself and put the other 4 in a larger baggie with your name on it as well.
Next month Cindy will be demonstrating how it's put together.

Maxine taught us a new technique. She passed out a few samples of this block and we are supposed to bring them done next month and then we can make a Charity quilt. It was very interesting and looks really hard, I hope it's not.
Start by laying the block out.

Then either sew the corners of the middle pieces. Match up the notches and be sure to take a 1/4" seam so the centers are touching.
Let's hope we all can remember how and show our finished blocks next month.

We just finished tying a full size quilt that we pieced from a bunch of left-over fabric. It was fun to watch the kids get involved in the project. I loved it when they would help each other above and below the quilt!

Linda Bringhurst taught us how to do an invisible Machine applique technique. She started by showing us some quilts that have used this method.

Machine Appliqué
Supplies
• Freezer paper
• Invisible thread
• Thread to match background
• Glue stick (clear/non-acid/non-permanent)
Stitch
• zig zag
or
• blind hem
Set your sewing machine to a close stitch length and have the stitch width set to just barely catch the fabric of your appliqué piece.
Steps
1. Trace appliqué pattern onto freezer paper and cut freezer paper pattern out on cutting line.
2. Iron freezer paper template onto the wrong side of your appliqué fabric.
3. Cut out your fabric appliqué with a 1/8 inch seam allowance to turn under.
4. Turn under the seam allowance and glue to freezer paper. (be careful to make smooth edges)
5. Stitch around the edge of your appliqué (pay close attention to points and valleys)
6. After your appliqué is completed, trim background fabric away leaving your 1/4 inch seam allowance.
7. Gently remove your freezer paper template from the back of the appliqué. On very small appliqué pieces (dots) leave the paper in.
8. Press your appliqué from the wrong side of quilt.

One hint that she added was to tighten the tension on your bobbin thread a little bit.
Pam also shared with us a tool that she learned about in an applique class. The black area is sand paper so that your applique piece will stay in place while you are working with it. It can be ordered from Piper's Quilts.

but I'm posting these darling quilts Joleen made. They are for her sister-in-laws twin baby girls who will arrive any day now. The print is pink and purple lady bugs. Joleen pieced and quilted these herself! Way to go!

Melissa was the winner of the Flower block of the month. Congratulations Melissa!

Cindy and Hollie suggested that we do a block exchange. They showed a few quilts that they thought might good for this. The guild members chose the Road to Oklahoma quilt. Cindy will make up instructions to give out next month and they will plan on it lasting for three months.

Batting - What a decision to make??

A few little things...

The Mickey bags were not, technically, sewing, but I thought they were fun. I just bought the two for a dollar reusable bags from Dollar Tree. I covered up the small logo on the bottom corner of the bag with permanent black marker- easy peasy. Then I traced the Mickey shape on fusible craft bond (the super thick, non-sew type) and ironed on the fabric. (Important note: these bags are not made of fabric... if you don't cover the WHOLE thing with a pressing cloth your iron may end up covered with a thick gooey tar-like substance. Second important note: Faultless Hot Iron cleaner can remove thick gooey tar-like substances, as well as interfacing stuck directly to the iron.) Then I just ironed a strip of ribbon that matched the fabric to the top. Finally, I took some permanent ink and stamped my kids initials on the bags and outlined the letters with glitter glue. It was the perfect thing to fill with treats, coloring books, crayons, and MP3 players for our drive to Disneyland, and they cost under a dollar each to make.

This pink, green and brown quilt has gone to live with my cousin's new baby girl. I hope she likes it, because I really did. In fact, I kind of wanted to keep it. It is all flannel, and is backed with pink fuzzy minky and is SOOO soft. Shanda quilted it with darling little loops and flowers.

This sailboat quilt is for my other cousin's new baby boy. I pieced the back and the front. It took me a long time to draw a pattern for it that I liked, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

As far as I know, I only have two more cousins expecting, as well as one niece or nephew on the way, so I'll be done with baby sewing before I know it!

Humanitarian Sewing Projects

Every Thursday Leisa Sorensen is hosting Humanitarian Projects at her home.
You can go anytime from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Anyone is welcome to come and sew, or take a project to work on at home. There is plenty of room to work and store projects in her basement. Also, if you have any fabric, batting or other sewing supplies, donations are appreciated but not expected. You can come anytime, and there is usually a group of us working from 12:00-3:00. We are currently working on getting a couple of scrap quilts ready to tie. We also have fabric ready to make recieveing blankets, booties, wall hangings and school bags. Please tell us if you know of any other Humanitarian needs that we could make projects for. This would also be a great time to work on quilts for Haiti to donate to the Utah Quilt Guild. If you have questions call Carolyn.

Marsha and MaryAnn from the Corn Wagon Quilt shop in Springville came to do our program this month. They showed us two different applique techniques. The first was a block from Penny Haren's Pieced Applique book. This pattern is also found in the Feb 2009 Quilting Classic Quilts Magazine. The website for her book publisher is www.landuercorp.com. There are more stores online than you could shop at if you worked at it all day everyday (trust me…) For most things, it’s probably easier and just as cost effective to shop locally (to save shipping costs, be able to actually see fabrics, support local retailers, etc.) However, no one store can carry every line and sometimes stores sell out of a particular piece you need, and that’s where online shopping can be a lifesaver. Just remember to check shipping costs ahead of time- that can be a difference of several dollars a yard when you calculate it in. If you haven’t shopped on eBay for fabric, it is definitely worth a look. It’s a great place to find “out of production” fabrics, and if you have lots of free time you can catch auctions at bargain prices (I frequently pick up charm packs for around $3..) You don’t have to bid, either, there are plenty of “Buy it Now” items that just have a set price. As for reliability, if you check the sellers rating, you can shop very safely- just be sure to choose someone who has an established reputation as a trustworthy seller.

Etsy is like the biggest craft fair imaginable, just online. The only things that can be sold on Etsy are handmade goods, or supplies to make handmade goods. You can search for fabrics or patterns, and if you don’t find what you are looking for in a regular search, try clicking the tab to search under “supplies.” There are also LOTS of fabric sets for sale, if you are looking for coordinated bundles of fabric to use together. Again, check the seller reviews, but for what it’s worth, I’ve made dozens of purchases here and never had a problem. It’s also just fun to browse items that are being sold to find inspiration for things you want to make.

There are Yahoo groups for everything. Just go to www.yahoo.com and search under “Groups” for things that interest you. One I have used is:

This was suggested to me as a great place to shop for a “pre-loved” sewing machine, but there is a lot more there as well. You must apply for membership, and then you may list for sale any sewing related items. You can also browse the listings and buy things. I just purchased a “bundle” of 22 quilt magazines for $14 (plus shipping) which is a fun way to decide which magazines you like best before subscribing, or to get back issues of favorites magazines you may have missed.

Snow Goose

Carol started our meeting by finalizing plans for The Snow Goose Quilt Show.

Jan will be at the Fair Building on Thursday at 2:00 to start collecting the quilts to show. Also, bring your non quilt sewing items to display, as well as any antique quilts.

We still need people to sign up to sit at the front table on Saturday. Those who signed up to make goodies to sell, please have them wrapped and ready to go. Thanks to everyone for their hard work!

It is not too late to sign up for a class. The deadline has been extended to the 17th. Take your registration form and money to Linda Kersey. Also, let her know if you would like to reserve a time to have your quilt apprised by Sandra Starley. She is an excellent quilt appraiser and the cost is 35$.

Cedar Chest Quilter's Winter Festival

Last weekend I headed down to Cedar to the Cedar Chest quilter's winter retreat. My Aunt and I went to the trunk show by Blanch Young. Blanch is 90 years old and showed some fantastic quilts. I loved her amazing use of color and the way that she used big prints on the back of her quilts. Here are a few pictures from her trunk show. My favorite saying from her trunk show was "Some mistakes I make, make the best quilts!"

My Aunt Karla and I took an all day class from Blanch's daughter Lynette Bingham. We made a baby trip around the world quilt that was called Twice as nice. This actually ended up making two quilts in reverse order. Her are the tops of the first quilt that Karla and I finished. Lynette has a fabric shop in Hurricane Utah called Main Street Quilt Cottage. I will add her link on the side. This retreat was really fun and we just might have to make this a yearly tradition!

I just checked out the newest 'recipe' for moda bake shop and it is darling for Valentines. I also went to the site of the contributor, Piece N Quilt. She has some darling quilts and tutorials. I thought the spray starch applique method was interesting and I might try it. This site will be another one that I add to my favorites, along with the dozens of others I have for favorites. I guess that just about anything quilting is my favorite!

Pauline Warner is our new President for 2010. Cindy Gardner. be over the program this year and started the meeting by giving an overview of some upcoming events. Next month we will learn needle turn applique taught by Jan Dutson. On April 8th we will have a class on maintaining your Feather Weight machines. Our garden Party will be in August at Carol's house and we will have all day sews in June and July. On September 9th we will have Barbara Walsh teach a class to us on organizing your sewing space. We will also have Marsha and her "Side Kick" from the Corn Wagon come to teach an applique block. This class date will be announced later. This sounds like a fun filled and educational year ahead!

Okay, I'll quit being lazy and post some stuff....

Shanda and I made a baby quilt for a girl in our ward. Don't look too closely, however, as we apparently sew very different 1/4 inch seams (sometimes even different from ourselves....?!?) Overall, though, it turned out soft and cute, and Shanda's quilting makes it look kind of fabulous.
( I should apologize in advance that every quilt picture I ever post will have feet sticking out underneath...)

I finished my coin quilt that I made out of a charm pack (Sweet by Moda.) I really like it. I used Kona cotton for the off-white, and I really like it. I'll be using it again.

And the back...

And I put together a kit (I know, gasps of shock...) But really this one was pre-cut and so easy. It didn't even take an hour (unless you count the time used sewing ricrac on, which is a little challenging for me!)
Shanda practiced her daisy quilting on it, and I wish it showed up better, because it is darn cute. The back is polka dot minkee- you can sort of see the cute daisy quilting on this picture if you look very closely....

And finally, we decided to make new school bags for my girls again (since the ones they are using are nearly three months old, and therefore, ancient...) We did messenger bags this time using rag squares. They chose their own fabric, and I think they turned out pretty cute.
Miss M. was all about the bright colors. Hers is made of cotton quilt fabric.
Miss R. chose pastel flannels for her bag. It is very soft.

A Few Projects

I have been really slow at posting some of the things that I have been working on. This is really late but I made these skirts for my girls for Easter. The first three are a two tier skirt from a pattern that I found on line and the smallest one I made up from the scraps.

One of my friends wanted me to make some aprons for her mother and mother-in-law for mother's day. I actually made her three different aprons but could only find pictures of two of them.

After making the aprons for her I decided I wanted one for myself and just finished mine a couple of weeks ago.

So I didn't make this last apron, my sister-in-law made this one, but I loved how she added the hot-pink rickrack

So since NOBODY else seems to be posting, I thought I'd at least put pictures of my last few projects. Most of you guys have seen them, but that's okay, I suppose. The bag above was a gift for one of my daughter's friends on her birthday. It reverses to the picture below...
If I am going to be totally honest, I kind of wanted to keep it! I like the bright green.

The next two bags are my girls' school bags. They are reversible, too, but for some reason, I forgot to take pictures of the other side. Oh, well.

This is the baby quilt Shanda finally convinced me to finish. And that Shanda quilted. And that she did the hand stitching on the binding on because I am a crybaby and I hate doing that part. It now belongs to my cute little newborn nephew.
Do you like my husbands shoes peeking out under the quilt? If anyone has advice on how to take a picture of a quilt without shoes or tops of heads showing up, let me know!

Blue and yellow version two...

I just finished a second tiny turning twenty. This one was for my friend Jessica's baby. Instead of doing the quilt-as-you-go sashing this time, and because I'm not very good at it, I decided to do it the regular way and add borders instead. Shanda quilted it on her longarm-and did the binding. It turned out very soft and sweet, I think! Now, I'm ready for someone to have a girl. I have two more boy babies coming (not personally, mind you, but in my family,) and I have fabric purchased for their projects. But I'm kind of in the mood for pink!

I am pretty late to post our adventures at the shop hop. I guess I have been too busy quilting and loving all of my great fabric finds! Shanda and I hit all of the stores, some twice and some not on the hop in two days! Some of our favorites were Elaine's Quilt Block and Quilts Etc Etc. We of course always love the Corn Wagon too. My mom joined us for part of the fun and we ended up in a Hula Hooping contest at the Corn Wagon. It was a tight race until they made us walk while Hula Hooping and I just couldn't beat my mom at that so she was the winner! I found fabric for two new quilts. We had better get quilting so we can go on the next shop hop!

What Kathy has been doing

The tractor quilt. I have it all pieced together. I just need to put borders on and then bind it. This will go on Mikey's bed when he gets a big boy bed. I have to stop with this quilt for now, because I have decided to make my sister-in-law and my sister a baby blanket and one is due at the end of July, the other in September. So I have to get busy on those. I will post progress when I get started.

Here is Lanie's quilt, I made her awhile ago. We have it on her bed. Hopefully you can see the wall to match. The pillow is my Great grandmother's. I have an orange bed skirt to match.

What Shanda's been up to!

So it's been a long time since I've got together with friends to quilt. Our lives are just a mess as school comes to a close. Carolyn wanted me to post some of my pictures of what I've been doing. The first picture is a block that we made in block of the month. It's a flying geese pinwheel pattern. I am going to put it together with the green, as soon as I can find some more. The other picture is a triple treat petite. I happen to LOVE this pattern. I borrowed Melissa's shape cut ruler and cut it out in like 10 minutes flat! It was fun. Anyway, I have another couple of projects started. I will take pictures of them and post again soon! I promise.

I found this fabric on the 50% off table at Mom's and couldn't resist it. I thought it would make some cute aprons for 6 little girl cousins. So, here are the girls in their aprons learning how to make some Easter Rice Crispie Treats with their Granny.

Also, I just ordered some fabric from https://zandsfabrics.com, and they had a smoking good clearance section. I ordered five (or ten) yards that was only $3.59/yard. Their new stuff isn't bad either- I needed some of the Moda Sweet line that they didn't have in town, and they had it for only $7.50/yard.

Another cool shopping find is http://www.thousandsofbolts.com . They carry fabric lines that are a little older, but super cheap (mostly 3-6 dollars a yard.) Also, they have 108" backing fabrics starting at $8.95 a yard.

Yes, I do other things besides playing online. Sometimes. Just not today.

Quilt Hunt

So here is one of the results of my quilt hunt. I found two quilts made by my great grandma Lydia Finlinson.

This first quilt is a double wedding ring that my great grandma Lydia made for my Grandma Isobel Finlinson Williams' wedding. The second quilt is also made by Lydia but I don't know anything else about it. I have found more quilts I will be posting later.

So Carolyn, Sherida and I took the Crazy Quilt class at Snow Goose. It was really fun, and we learned this cool quilt as you go thing where you use decorative stitches on your machine to quilt each block separately and then sash them together. I immediately wanted to try a baby quilt. So I bought a new sewing machine with lots of cute stitches (nothing fancy, mind you- I just needed the stitches!) and set to work on a baby quilt for my friend. Along the way, I learned that I don't like quilting as I go. You can't pull the blocks around and make them line up like you can with just one layer of fabric, so all my sashings don't line up at all. It's okay for this, since the project was all kinds of crazy patterns anyway (and my friend who is receiving it is the nicest person I know and will love it no matter what.) But if I was doing something fussy that I wanted to look really perfect, I would definitely not try this.

I debated including this picture, since it really shows off how crooked by sashings are, but I think it is still kind of cute, and you can see how it would work if someone smarter than me was doing it.

Oh, well. At least it is a project checked off my to-do list. And it gave me a good excuse to buy a new sewing machine. Now all I have left to do today is finish my snowball exchange blocks (don't worry- they'll be straighter that the baby quilt!), make my block of the month block, work on a UFO, tend a sick baby, and maybe have surgery or break my leg so Shanda will make me a quilt.

Hi all,
No, I don't know where all my kids are, but then they range in age from 24 to 38, so I guess they don't have to answer to me anymore.

Yes, my children have clothes. My second daughter has WAYYYY more than she needs, but she has great taste! She also rivals Imelda Marcos for her shoe collection and has just as many purses.

If they haven't been fed, it's their own fault.

Quilting news:
I am so excited because I just purchased new sewing room furniture that will be arriving in 4-6 weeks; hopefully sooner. I've been having back problems from my less than desirable setup, so I'm hopeful this will be a great solution. (Sounds like enough justification for buying it to me!)

I also finished my first Guild UFO and it is off for quilting.

I am leaving for California on Friday with my daughter (the one with all the clothes, shoes, and purses). Don't know when I'll be back --- sometime next week, but I definitely plan on hitting some quilt stores. We're flying though, so I don't know how much I will be able to bring back.

When I get my new setup, I will post pictures.

Does this look familiar? I don't know why I am so incapable of an original idea. I guess that Lisa's designs are so cute that I just have to copy them. This is actually one of two that I am making in this pattern. This is the baby of the original. I made it for my niece who had surgery. The day that I sewed the border on this, my other niece, Mckenzie, broke her leg, so now I am going to have to make another!

Quilt Hunt

So I have realized that I come by my love of fabric and quilting honestly. I was reading about my grandma Isobel Finlinson Williams. She grew up in Oak City and her family owned the Oak City Cash Store. She told about how much she loved the fabric in the store. Her mother Lydia Finlinson was known for having everyone over to quilt. So I guess I can blame my quilting addiction on my Grand Sew Mama and my Great Grand Sew Mama! I know that there are some quilts out there that were made by my grandma Isobel and my great grandma Lydia, in fact I think I might have one or two myself. So I am going on a quilt hunt to find some of their quilts and the stories behind them.
This quilt was my bedspread when I was a little girl. I loved this quilt as a little girl, and was excited to find that my mom still had it. It was given to my mom by my Grandma Isobel, but my mom didn't know who made it. I will have to see if I can find out the story behind my first quilt! Wish me luck!

Sew Mama Test

I guess I need to add "Make sure two year old does not have a bottle of nail Polish" to the sew mama test. I was sewing away this morning when my little girl came in to show me that she had painted her own finger nails, fingers, and the carpet in the playroom. I then lost a good hour of my sewing time scrubbing my carpet! Well, the good news is I got all of the polish out, the bad news is my UFO is still not finished.

Funniest thing just happened. I was sitting at my table sewing and having a great time. Cole came in and climbed up on my chair, behind me, gives me a huge hug and says, "You my sew mama!" I guess I really am a sew mama!

Snow Goose Festival quilts by Shanda

These are two of the five quilts I put in the quilt show. The pink one is a random pattern I created. I quilted it myself and now it's my daughters. The blue/green/pink one is a tossed nine patch. I enjoyed this pattern. It was a lot of fun to use the bright colors. I made it for my mother. She wants to make a quilt for her granddaughters. I told her this one should be Bailey's. I am going to be helping her quilt quite a few of them because she has thirty something granddaughters. I am still learning on my quilting machine. I want to practice on all my old quilts before I attempt it on one that actually cost a lot of money to make!

Snowball Nine Patch

Melissa, Shanda and I spent the day sewing last Thursday. We were working on our Snowball nine patches to swap at quilt guild. We thought this project wouldn't take very long so we all brought about 4 other projects to work on too. Boy were we wrong! It took us forever to get the first set finished! After the first set we were a little faster, but none of us got to work on any other projects that day. We were all a little scared of the "scrappy" look and were pretty sure that our blocks were the ugliest things we had ever made. In the end they turned out pretty cute (we hope!).
